BAHS Young Leaders 1998

The Young leaders Group of 1998
On entering into fourth form, we were faced with the challenge of becoming Young Leaders. We were thrilled when we heard the theme of this years competition:
"The Environment - Our Vision For A Better Caribbean"
A world of opportunity was now open to us. We had the opportunity to continue the Bishop Anstey tradition of pioneering in the field of Environmental Science. We saw a chance to help our siblings, who are the future of the Caribbean, and we had found a way to help our school. So, with the help of our teachers and parents, we endeavoured to design and produce a workbook entitled "Mervyns Caribbean Sea Adventure".
Our was not an easy one but it most certainly was an enjoyable experience. The following is an excerpt from the introduction to our workbook.
"Mervyns Caribbean Sea Adventure is aimed at educating Caribbean children between the ages of seven and nine about the Caribbean Sea, the sea which both unites and divides us. We will be looking at various forms of pollution including ship-generated waste and oil spills. We will also focus on the destruction of the marine environment, overfishing and the removal of coral from the reefs. We will also look at other interesting topics such as the worlds second largest barrier reef which lies off the coast of Belize.
This innovative book can be used profitably by parents and/or teachers as an educational tool. With the help of our mascot Mervyn the fish, we journey through the waters surrounding the islands of the archipelago. After the child has worked through this book we hope that he/she would have developed a greater understanding of the importance of conservation and preservation of the marine environment and in turn, of the environment on a whole.
In using this book, it is important to remember our user-friendly glossary which will expand the vocabulary of the child and also equip the child with the information necessary for understanding the book."
Please support your fellow Hilarians in their effort!!! Contact the school for further details.
