This is absolutely wonderful! I've just spent hours reading and remembering so much about our hallowed halls. It pleases me to see that young Hilarians, some still at school, are also bitten by the bug...this assures us that what we feel and what you have started here will live on. Do you guys sing Mrs. Spence's songs at the luncheons...has anyone compiled a book? Has anyone found out,Who is Sylvia? I still sing The Pirates Christmas with gusto! Thanks to your hand work I'm in touch with my long lost buddy, Margaret. Keep up the excellent work. Thanks, again.

I have just spent an hour reading the various entries in the guest book. I was thrilled to see a number of names I know well but haven't been in touch with for years. I am certainly interested in coming to the Summer 2002 Reunion, so please put me on the list Wendy Siung and whoever else is involved with the planning. I attended both BAJS and BAHS and have fond memories of both. I left in Lower Sixth or I would have done A levels with the class of 1972. My mother taught at BAHS, she was then Mrs. Taylor and my father was once the chaplain at BAHS known to most as "Father George." So there are a lot of connections for my family with the school. It's good to know that there is strong alumni participation in the life of the school. I recently discovered from my brother that there is a Washington alumni chapter that does a great deal of fundraising for BAHS and from reading the guestbook I gather there is also one in New York. Please include me. I love the website and the opportunity it affords us to keep in touch with other Hilarians. Hope I will hear from some of those I know. Fond regards, Gail Bindley-Taylor-Sainte

I've just spent an hour reading all the comments on this website and trying to figure out who I know from among the names. Turns out that I recognise quite a few names. I attended both BAJS and BAHS. I have fond memories of both. My Mother also taught here at different points in her career. Some of you may remember her Mrs. Taylor who taught Literature and French. It was great reading about Hilarians from several generations. Well I am here and certainly interested in that summer 2002 reunion of my classmates who did were there between 65 and 71. I left in Lower Six. I live in the US and work at the UN but I am easy to reach at gbtsainte@aol.com orSainte@un.org. I do the website and the opportunity to keep in touch afforded by this page. fond regards, Gail Bindley-Taylor-Sainte

My brother, now in South Africa, emailed my sister and myself with your web-site address. What nostalgia. I was there from 1964 to 1970 and would love to hear from any of my contemporaries- the Hilarians list should be able to be sorted by years as well as names for ease of access! Would love to see some photos of what the school looks like now as well.

I must say that connecting with my Hilarian sisters in New York has been extremely comforting in this transition I have made in my life. Life in NY since Sept.11th has definitely changed but of the few things that keep me grounded, the values and independence gained at BAJS and BAHS, keep me above just mere survival and routine existence. They help me to look each day in the face and know I can handle anything. To all my Hilarian sisters and especially those in the class of 1989 treasure the Hilarian Spirit

I am very impressed with the site, but then again, what does one expect to come out of the Bishop Anstey High School. I've always marvelled that although we may not get many scholarships at A'levels, Bishop's girls do VERY well at life. Let's continue to impress the world.

Just stumbled on this page.!!! I attended Bishop's in the 50's ,the days when Ms Shewsbury was Head mistress, and Ms Hobson the Asst. In reading the many messages I saw one from Gloria Murrell Jossah who is trying to organize a reunion for the class of 1953. She mentioned my sister's name Fae Halfhide. I am sad to report Fae died in November 1987. I would love to hear from any of my fellow classmates. Harolyn (Halfhide) Willeford AKA Buddy Willeford

My name is Jamilah Stewart, and I am a representative of the new generation of budding hilarians .Previously, I belong to form2c (2001), and I am just loving Bishop’s. What I love most, is the opportunity given to us, by the school, to join so many extra-curricular activities which helps us to be all rounded girls. (the best in the country actually). I am glad I found this site and will inform other classmates about it. Thank you.

As pageant co-ordinator and hilarian, I too, would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Debra Paul on copping the tiltle, this year. She has continued a trend of excellence synonymous with BAHS. In 1998, Khiah Cameron took the crown, Natalie Lamming was first runner up in 2000 and that same year Kemba Mark was also a contestant. The pageant is also produced by Renee Cummings who graduated in 1986 and whose motto at Miss TTNY is Intelligence is Beauty.

Hi everyone. Great to hear that everyone in NY & Wash. is okay. For those that do not already know, Adele Beckles had her operation and it was a success. Kudos to all of you that assisted in any way. If anyone is in direct contact with Adele please ask her to register with a up-to-date contact email on the bahs website. Quite a lot of people are still trying to get in contact with her and they are all emailing me:-) Best wishes to everyone, keep safe!!

Hi there, Thoroughly enjoyed your site.it's lots of fun to reminisce with all the old Hilareians. At BAHS 64-68 during the era of Valerie Doyle, Imogene Johnson, Hazel Gill, Denise Charles, Doreen Lewis and many more. I have not been in contact with many of you for twenty-plus years. Would love to talk to/hear from you. I try to be home for Carnival as much as possible. Perfect incentive to endure the winters, when you know that there is some sun and fun coming your way. I would love to have a reunion with 68-69ers. It was the days of Pat Bishop/West Indian History, in her AFRO hairstyle and afrocentric wear which caused a subtle stir in staid the halls of BAHS. It was Mrs Cansfield for scripture, Mrs Davis for English, Mrs Charles/Sewing to name a few. If any old hilarians are in the Stamford CT or vicinity do send a holler.

Ladies, Especially those in the years 1989/91. From all accounts our sisters are OK in New York and the Washington, DC areas. Strangely e-mail and Instant Messenger are the easiest ways to communicate just now since phones of all kinds are working only sporadically. To list the names of those that I know were in affected areas and for sure are well: Kathryn Parris, Jewel Redhead,Debra Paul, Michelle Williams, Lorraine Belasco, Lisa Blugh-Willis, Charmaine Grenade, Karen Abdool. Pray for their continued safety. Please keep us updated.

Bringing the Sisters Together
The Old Hilarians' Association held their annual luncheon at Bishop Anstey High School on Saturday last. This year's luncheon recognised students who graduated in the '70s and the honourees this year were Ingrid Lashley of Scotiatrust and Musicologist Dawn Batson. The Hilarians had a ball with singing and dancing competitions among themselves. Music was provided by DJ Royalty who is also a Hilarian as they danced to music of the '70s.

CALLING ALL MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1976 (O-Levels) and 1978 (A-Levels)!! WE 'D LIKE TO ORGANIZE A CARNIVAL REUNION FOR 2002!!! Carnival is Feb 11th and 12th 2002. ANYONE INTERESTED? Can I have a show of hands? OK emails then.... :-) It is really Marcia Annisette's idea, but I think it's a great one! I know many alumni who live abroad and visit T&T from time to time. Why not plan your next visit for Carnival time next year and we could all have a wonderful reunion too? Maybe even organize some Carnival activities and outings/BBQs together??? We could even arrange to PLAY MAS TOGETHER??!!!! Huh? I know she got me excited about the prospect. She's planning on coming and so am I, as well as Carol Caesar. But we need to know if any others are interested. I know Allison Dupigny and Aloma (Emamali) Ramdhoo would be interested. I saw them this Carnival. Come on all the Trini alumni. We want to hear from you too. It would be a good thing to respond in enough time so that we can all register for costumes in the same section of POISON!!!! So I am giving enough warning. Hi There;
Just wanted to say that I thought your selections for 'Women of Worth' were excellent. As a student ot BAHS in the sixties, I was inspired, encouraged, and motivated by Pat Bishop, who taught history at the time, but was also very involved in the music scene.
Miss Spence was also my music teacher at the time, however I would like to send along a note of congratulations to Miss Bishop, and am hoping that you can provide me with an e-mail address for her.
Thanking you,
Regards,

It has been removed, Tamika. Sorry for the delay -- I have been out of town and only noticed it today when I checked the Guestbook.
Nicole, Hilarians webmaster
Is there anyway to erase that smutt from the guest book, I check in from time to time to see what my fellow old hilarians have written and was apalled to see the disrespect for our prestigious school. Who could have possibly done that. Webmasters please try and see if it can be removed, it's not exactly pleasant opening the site and being presented with that image. Hello to all of graduating fifth form class of '94, miss those days and onlt have fond memories of Bishops.

Leslie Ewing-Chow, where are you? I recently got re-acquainted with one of your distant relatives, a "Ewing-Chow" gentleman in Singapore after whom I had last met about 8 years and he gave me a copy of a fantastic book on the Chinese in Guyana written by Trev Sue-A-Quan. For those with Guyanese-Chinese links ... I'm sure it'll prove interesting ("Roots") - I see that there are many names familiar to Trinidad. I discovered e.g. how the "Ewing-Chow" and some other family names originated. P.S. I have also read with great interest,Trevor Millett's "The Chinese in Trinidad"! Contact me or if anyone has leads on this 1974 classmate of mine!

dear editors,
I applaud your good work for I know how easily volunteering could engulf one"s life but those of us appreciate it and thank you so much.
having been in the what we fondly have referred to as the "Shurland Era " 1971 to 1978, I would like to see some interviews on where all these powerful women, the principals of bahs who influenced such generations of Bishopian women, are today. Read some of their comments about time and our appreciation of the influences they had on our lives. Quite often,we realise and acknowledge them too late.
A sort of BAHS magazine on the web.

On the passing of miss shrewsbury, i must admit surprise. I suppose those of my era, when we learnt the history of the school in those early years we mistakenly assumed all the people mentioned were also history. But I am glad that we had some personal representation at the funeral.

I look forward to seeing a calendar produced about out past principals.
For the record Miss Shurland, is still with us and looks not a day older. As a matter of fact , on meeting her I go into reflex "fix your uniform Mode"
Interviews with those teachers of yore, Mrs Bishop, Mrs Henderson, Miss Ruddell,Mrs davis, mrs Macdowell Mrs Birch, Mrs Araujo, to name but a few.

I would also like to know what became of the wall that the old hilarians sold, where we paid up to $500 TT dollars to have hands imprinted. Those of us who gave to this venture a few years ago are disappointed that the wall was broken down and to this day no one has had the courtesy to inform us of what its relocating plans are.

This has created a sour note amongst my peers and we made an oath not to give so generously to old hilarians until we have some public accountability.

As a result even the carnival fete this year which produced some unannouced changes. The food and lime remained excellent , the music sucked. I missed David Rudder's performance as like me ,a few of us always leave the bahs fete as our surety to see Rudder's carnival presentation.

I also missed not seeing the vibrant Diane Shurland on this years committee.
I recommend that the audit of the carnival fete could be posted on the website so that those of us who consider this our charitable event will know how many more we have to attend if Bahs is ever to break even.(2000 tickets @$250 each)

And this could apply to all fund raisers by bahs fundraisers.

looking forward to more info , with thanks Petra.

I attended Miss Shrewsbury's funeral today and it was a beautiful service. The funeral was held at the Anglican Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland, in the school chapel. She was the principal there for 15 years after leaving BAHS. The tributes to this visionary and independent woman were full of memories and examples of the way she touched others in her life. BAHS was mentioned on several occasions as she spent almost half her life in Trinidad. I was acknowledged publicly as a member of staff and a representative of BAHS and was a guest of the family at the funeral. At the end, the family members and friends (me included) followed the body to the gates of the school. The entire roadway was lined with silent girls who are now the present pupils. This was something that I will take with me forever: how one woman could make a difference to so many other women on both sides of the globe. I felt quite honoured to represent BAHS on this occasion. Dorothy (b.6 June 1906) died in her favourite chair on Friday March 9, 2001. She seemed to have simply drifted off to sleep. She died as she lived: independently and doing her own thing. She leaves a niece and nephew, several great-nieces and nephews and a great-great-niece and great-great-nephew. The entire service was filmed and the principal of the Diocesan School has promised to make a copy for BAHS. Condolences may be sent to her niece Bridget Graham, 542 Manukau Road, Auckland 3, New Zealand.

Last Saturday, while I was enjoying my first Christmas in Trinidad in 19 years (I visit every excuse I get, but have not been back for Christmas), Beverley Kitson-Solomon, June Mc.Neil-Woodroffe, Clair Mc.Neil-Fritz, Greta Robertson, Carol Warner, Isabel Anderson-Chaves, Margaret McDowall-Thompson - all of the 5th form class of '67 and Denise Stephenson-Stuempfle - of the class of '69 treated me to a wonderful impromptu luncheon at Beverley's house in St.Anns. What a wonderful mini-reunion that was! Ladies, thank you all so much. The food was delicious and the company superb! How well we look despite the fact that Father Time is constantly trying to make an appointment on our busy calendars! About two years ago, I sent out an unsuccessful appeal to our classmates for a 2000-2001 reunion. There are only a few of us left to cross over into the mysterious 50s. Let's do so in fine style.
